Generate the diagrams from a FuciniUML model, and draw a diagram to have the model written back. The picture and the text stay one thing rather than two that drift.
A model is text, so it lives in the repository, diffs in a pull request and is reviewed like code. A diagram is what a person reads. FuciniUML keeps both current from either side, in the editor you already have open.
